    From Garzanti,
    scalo:
    l'insieme degli impianti e delle attrezzature predisposti per l'arrivo e la partenza di merci e passeggeri nei porti, negli aeroporti e nelle stazioni ferroviarie;

    I'm not sure there's an equivalent English term. I would say "railway yards", but that refers to goods and maintenance, not people.

    I think Neuromatico gave a very good answer ("scalo" = "railway yard", or "depot"). In Italian, you can also say "fare scalo" (e.g. "ho fatto scalo a Parigi") when you want to say "I went to Paris" in a more formal way.
    "Scali ferroviari" can also mean "railway station", depending on the context: "lo scalo ferroviario di Roma" = "Rome's railway station". In this example, the word "scalo" simply means "station".
