scored from offside / scored from an offside (football)

If Christiano Ronaldo scores from an offside position, can I say:

He scored from offside.
He scored from an offside.

The first is better than the second, but I wouldn't use either. I'd say "He scored from an offside position" or "He was offside when he scored" (but of course, if the referee gives a free kick for offside, he doesn't actually score).
