scuola media (secondaria di primo grado)

Ciao a tutti,

nella discussione della mia tesi di laurea dovrei usare spesso l'espressione "scuola media" (quella che oggi si chiama secondaria di primo grado).

Frase: la ricerca è frutto di un tirocinio svoltosi in una scuola media della città.

So che scuola media in italia non ha un vero corrispettivo nel sistema inglese. Avrei bisogno di capire se mentre parlo in inglese posso dire middle school or junior school. Oppure dovrei tenere "scuola media", che però mi pare brutto. Un madrelingua come direbbe?

Perhaps you could use "lower secondary school".

We do have "middle schools" in the UK, though only in certain parts of the country. Have you looked through the various definitons in WR? "Junior high school" might be a good option. Or "secondary school" as utsubo suggests. What is your intended readership? If for the UK, "middle school ages X to X" might be appropriate. If for a wider readership including the US, "junior high school" but again specifying the age group.

Edit: Murphy's suggestion is certainly widely understood in the UK

I'd say scuola media and then qualify it in English with the ages of the children But that's my opinion. I'm sure others would translate it


"stage" isn't used in English in this context, it's from French I believe

It is for my theseis presentation. Here in Italy. Examiners are all Italian and they know what is scuola media. Plus I'm talking, I don't have to write it in my work.

Io non lo lascerei mai in italiano se la discussione è in inglese.. tradurrei con secondary school semplicemente

Mi sembra l'opzione più sicura...nemmeno a me piace l'idea di dire "scuola media" in italiano. Mi basta che dicendo "secondary school" la commissione non mi guardi male. Insomma, sono esperti (e pignoli) di didattica.

Stage è francese, come ha detto Gandalfo, quindi evitalo in inglese (e se lo usi in italiano ti prego di pronunciarla alla francese...non ne posso più di sentirla pronunciare in inglese.). In inglese si dice anche "internship", ma nel tuo caso parlerei di un "period of training". Quando ero a scuola (a Londra negli anno 70) avevamo una middle school, che andava dagli 11 ai 14 anni circa, ma lower secondary va bene secondo me.)

No, I'm afraid this would mean nothing to an English speaker. "First grade" is grade one, prima elementare, the grade you're in when you're 5 or 6 years old. The first years of secondary school are called different things in different parts of the English-speaking world, but putting "secondary school" and "first grade" together would just be confusing.
