"One of my difficulties in deciding to change was that it seemed self- indulgent. After all, lots of people have problems with their eating and weight. But the truth I had to face was that the problem was so much more invasive than it seemed—it affected everything. I couldn’t be me while I still had the problem."

The word self-indulgent is clear to me more or less (too ready to satisfy one's own desires), but I have doubts here in this context. I understand it as: I would like to change but so many people have problems with eating and weight that it seems as if I was treating myself in a special way (because I'm thinking of a change).
