self-relinquishment

Hi everybody, I don't understand this sentence. Please explain it to me:
The boy was sitting in silence and watching other people who sit around him talking.
"Those people were like movies playing around me - I watched and listened with the same easy self-relinquishment you'd bring to a seat in the fifth row. They enjoyed being the characters they's created, and didn't depend on me for input."

Thanks

And the other way round, the characters didn’t expect from the boy any involvement, so he could chill out and listen to the conversation as if he was seating in the fifth row, watching movies, as an observer.
