LINA'S MOTHER: You're wearing a senior jacket, how old are you?
LINA'S FRIEND: I'm 17.
LINA'S MOTHER: Lina's a sophomore, you realise.
LINA'S FRIEND: Yes, ma'am.
Ouija: Origin of Evil, movie

The movie is set in 1967. Could you explain to me what that means, i.e., him wearing "a senior jacket" and her being "a sophomore"? Is it like, thry are very different?

Thank you.

Context: US high schools. A sophomore is in 10th grade. A senior is in 12th grade.
(9th grade: freshman. 11th grade: junior. The pattern repeats for the four undergraduate years of college.)
