    I would say the following

A series consists of a fixed number of programmes. For example a ten episode series on "Animals of the World"

A serial is a regular broadcast without a specific end to the story. Example "Friends"

A soap-opera is a drama that drags on (often for years and years) and deals with the day to day trials, romances, family squabbles etc. of a number of regular characters. It is likely to be based in a single location.

I am however open to other people´s interpretations.

Ugly Betty is just in its fourth season, which started last Friday.

So "Friends" is clearly a Soap opera, and not a serial... Is it because of the funny dialogues that can't be a soap opera?

A soap-opera is a long-running drama that has many, many characters. Families, friends, neighbours. These people weave in and out of the plot. There are many plots and subplots which extend from one episode to the next.

I would describe "Friends" as a "situation comedy" The number of characters is limited and (although there is some continuity between episodes) each epsiode has its own complete storyline.
