The Big Bang Theory Season 03 Episode 23

Leonard: Let me explain what we’re doing here. Um, in 1969, the astronauts on Apollo 11 positioned reflectors on the surface of the moon, and we’re going to shoot a laser off one of them and let the light bounce back into this photomultiplier.
...
...
Leonard: Don’t worry about the moon. We, we set our laser to stun.

What does this 'stun' mean?

If they "set their laser to stun", they turned the power of the laser down so that it would merely stun people they shot with the laser. If the laser were set to kill, the power would be turned up so that the laser would kill anybody that they shot with the laser.

It's also something of a small joke. You can't actually set a laser to 'stun' - but a standard Star Trek line is "phasers to stun". Can you confirm that somebody asked if the laser would damage the Moon?

More 'dumb ass' than 'smart ass', I'd have thought ... also, sarcasm and condescension from the character called Leonard. Andygc's right. It's a clear reference to Star Trek.
