When did the Shahmukhi script start being used for Punjabi? What is the earliest documented work in Shahmukhi? I've read conflicting statements about this in various sources, with some claiming the script is a recent 20th century invention and other claiming it actually predates the use of Gurmukhi.

Punjabi historically has been written in variants of the Arabo-Persian script (cf. Urdu script) since the times of the poet Khwaja Farid (d. 1266). It is the name of the script which has been further developed that began to be used in the 20th century.
