Hi, I need some help to understand the expression "share of eyeballs" in the context of the NASDAQ market.

"The valuations that permitted this spectacular performance defied all traditional metrics. Not profits, but such measures as 'share of eyeballs' became a way of analyzing the worth of businesses."

Than you

It will help if you tell us the name of the company whose performance is being discussed. "Share of eyeballs" usually refers to the proportion of an audience which a brand or medium attracts, for example in advertising or web site visitors. Are they talking about a web-based corporation, such as Google or Yahoo! or Amazon?

The last two of these did not make profits for a considerable period of time, as I understand it, but nevertheless had a large "share of eyeballs" (site visitors, "hits").

They're talking about the Nasdaq composite in general during the great high-technology bubble of the late 1990s. But thank you fo your help.
