She's swell

Hello everybody,

I recently watched the film "BIG EYES" from Tim Burton (which takes place in the late 1950s - early 1960s) and I heard "Jane is swell" after someone asked "how's your daughter?".

In this case, does "swell" mean that Jane is fine? (that's what I thought...)

Thank you in advance.

Thank you for your help! I guess it's not something we could say again today but that was quite frequent back in the 1950s?!

It was quite frequent in American English, but I don't think it ever made it across the Atlantic in any significant way — other than in American movies and books. I'd be interested in an AmE view as to whether it's still used today.

    Ws:)
