Hi Forum Members,

I'm a kindergarten teacher and am writing comments on report cards. One of my students does not yet grasp the concept that letters stand for sounds (or, for that matter, that collections of letters stand for spoken words). I'd like to say just that on the report card, but our principal prefers that we word areas for improvement in more positive terms. So, in the case of this student, I'm gonna write the following:

As far as the alphabet, Susan is working toward grasping the concept that letters stand for sounds.

How would I say that in Spanish? Here's my attempt:

En cuanto al alfabeto, Susan está trabajando para poder entender que las letras representan sonidos.

Is that fine? Please advise me. Thank you!
