"sift down the timing-glass"

What is the meaning of this construction?:

"To thrall the damned place, lock it in,
The peachfuzzed boys in trees, the girls with unsprung syrups
In their summer marrows; the grains of pollen
That sift down the timing-glass"

For some poetic reason, Bradbury's metaphorical hourglass is filled with pollen instead of sand and measures some other period than an hour so he calls it a "timing-glass".
