sign language

To me "sign language" and "gesture" are the same. It is enough to use either this or that but why did they go together?
"Sign language and gestures are used to communicate instead of spoken language."
Thanks very much.

To me, they mean slightly different things...
Sign language = a complete language used by deaf people to communicate
Gesture = a single action or movement to convey an idea
    eg  to mean "good"

Both "sign language" and "gesture" are forms of communication.
