A friend has posted a photo of hers in front of a church that appeared familiar to me.So I commented "Is this picture taken in Goa?there is a same church there as this one." However on giving it a second thought I wondered whether I was right or not.Should it have been "Is this picture taken in Goa? There is a similar church there to this one."

Thanks in anticipation.

Your second thought was better - you should use similar here, rather than same.

You can however say "it looks the same" to mean "it looks similar"
