Apples and oranges are both fruits that are commonly found in grocery stores. (A)_____, they are a good source of vitamins and dietary fiber. Apples are usually sweeter than oranges, which tend to be tangy and slightly tart. People often have a preference for one over the other, depending on their taste buds.

(A) Similarly vs Additionally

I want to know the correct and natural discourse markers in the blank (A). And could you explain why the expression is appropriate?

  • I think it's appropriate to include "Additionally" in (A). There is no similarity between the fact that they are found in grocery stores and their nutritional benefits. Therefore, I think it's right to add more characteristics of apples and oranges.

The reason I'm asking this is because my school teacher said that "(A) Similarly“ is the correct answers, and I don't quite understand.

I would have chosen what you chose:

Apples and oranges are both fruits that are commonly found in grocery stores. (A) Additionally, they are a good source of vitamins and dietary fiber. (This is an additional fact about apples and oranges.)

Similarly, would be inappropriate as there is no similarity between being in a grocery store and being a good source of vitamins and dietary fiber.
