skating/skiing on the frozen lake

    The lake has frozen and many people are skating/skiing on it.


    Hi,
    Do both skating and skiing make sense in the above? Thanks.

    I would use skating. You can't ski on ice!

    Agree. Skiing is for snow. Skating is for ice.

    Perfectly all right providing it has snowed as well. There are about 180,000 lakes in Finland and people ski on them every winter.

    Well to be precise, they are skiing on the snow which covers the frozen lake.

    They are not skiing on the frozen lake itself.
