The value of his stock skyrocketed close to $8 billion.

HI,

I am curious to know it's grammatical to have "close" in front of "to" in the above sentence I wrote.

It somehow doesn't sound right to me but I can never be sure.

Is it natural or is it bad grammar?

Thanks.

I wouldn't ... let's keep the focus on "skyrocketed" by giving an actual target:

The value of his stock skyrocketed to nearly $8 billion.
