They’re wearing prewashed baggy-in-the-seat jeans, too-big T-shirts, too-big polo shirts hanging out at the bottom to make room for their bellies, too- tight khakis, ug - lee rumpled woolen ankle- high socks of rubber-mat black, paint-job green, and slop-mop maroon . . . and sneakers.

what color is ut and why? (what is slop-mop actually??)

When I see the odd phrase "slop-mop maroon", I think of a nasty purplish color that you might see on a mop as you were cleaning up a bathroom floor in some sleazy bar after somebody had puked all over that floor.

Owlman is probably right: it's a maroon that reminds one of mopping up something unpleasant, like from a dirty kitchen floor, which is perhaps what slop refers to directly (and colorfully).
