Smoke grass / weed or pot?

  • They mean the same thing, they're just used in slightly different circumstances. A weed smoker would say they're smoking weed. If someone talks about smoking pot, it's a lot more clinical/removed and they either don't smoke or they're a cop. Grass is either regional or outdated by a bunch of decades, but it's still easily understood. Herb is another synonym, used more on the Jamaican side of English (as is ganja).

    I associate these slang words with three generations in the 20th and 21st centuries in the US.

    pot = before the mid 1960s, approximately
    grass = mid 1960s to perhaps 2000 - 2005?
    weed = 2005 or so to the present
