So etwas macht man auch nicht. (from the year 1919)

The German sentence below is from 1919 or 1920.

I'm not clear what "auch" is doing in the sentence.

Context: The person who spoke the sentence had just watched someone make a foolish blunder.

Question: Is either of my two English translations right?

So etwas macht man auch nicht.

Such a thing one simply does not do.

Such a thing one just does not do.

Thank you for any assistance.

Depending on context, it could also mean "too":

(Man bohrt nicht in der Nase und) so etwas macht man auch nicht.

In this case, "auch" would be stressed.

So etwas macht man auch nicht. = Such a thing one just does not do.
    Here, "macht" is stressed.

In a text (not spoken), the only way to know if "macht" or "auch" is stressed is from the context, correct? The sentence itself does not reveal that?

When I first saw this sentence "So etwas macht man auch nicht.", I thought of "nicht einmal" as a synonym of "auch (nicht)". In DWDS this use is described as follows: "verstärkt eine Verneinung". An example: Es ist auch nicht (= nicht einmal) einer davongekommen. I think it is translated in English "not even".

    Perseus, thanks.
Would your translation be "Such a thing is not even done." ?
As "strengthening a negation" -- I suppose that becomes "Such a thing is just not done" -- no? Or "Such a thing one just does not do."
