Soccer lingo

Soccer, like all sports, has it's own lingo. Unfortunately, being in America and knowing only very basic Italian, I have a difficult time reading soccer news in the newspaper "L'Eco di Bergamo" online. My son plays soccer in a town near Bergamo and when the newspaper writes about him and his team, it takes me forever to translate it into English. (And I don't do a very good job of it!)

Does anyone have any suggestions on translating these sports stories?

    Grazie mille! I have tried Intertran, but machine translation isn't very good.
    Word Reference is simply wonderful for word by word and phrase by phrase translation. And yet, there's much to learn!

    You need some lingo, of course ;)

    Segnare/fare gol = to score
    Calcio d'angolo = corner (kick)
    (calcio di) Rigore = penalty kick
    Calcio di punizione = free kick
    Deviare la palla = deflect the ball
    Calcio d'inizio = kick-off
    Primo/secondo tempo
    Palo = post?
    Autogol
    Di testa
    Arbitro = referee?
    Guardalinee = linesman?
    Allenatore/Mister = Coach
    Presidente = president?
    Panchina/in panchina = bench
    Stare in panchina = to be a bench warmer
    Lasciare in panchina = to leave on the sidelines, to bench

    Hopefully we can make a longer list :) and we can find the right words together

    clear enough, the right sentences are:

    Mio figlio è un calciatore (or mio figlio fa il calciatore)
    è centrocampista per Alzano in prima categoria.

    as told in another thread we say mio figlio, mio padre, mio zio, mio nonno without determinative article (il, lo, la)

    we use it when the plural form is used:
    I miei zii, i miei figli....

    imperative tense - tenta ---> try (try this)

    to try = tentare di, cercare di, provare a

    That is a darn good translation, perfectly clear but, to be precise, it should be "I can assure you, YOU are at A high level."

    L'Alzano stenta a imporre il ritmo ma non rinuncia al proprio gioco votato all'attacco – schierando prima due poi tre punte – che trova in Provenza e Padrone le sue pedine fondamentali. alto sopra la traversa.
