sombra to take someone's photo?

USA English
I was looking at a book of Ruven Afanador's photography and he mentions (in English) that in his father's time, to take someone's photo was called taking their "sombra/take their shadow". Would someone be able to tell me what phrase one uses with the word sombra to express taking someone's photo? I've used "sacar una foto de vos, etc", but find the use of sombra poetic, if not too poetic at the risk of being archaic.

Thank you all!
