Hello!

I wonder whether the usage of the "conviction" (meaning belief) is ok (the sentence is mine):
Many people were of the conviction that the Earth was flat.

I know "were convinced that" sounds better, but I'm not sure that the sentence above is an actual mistake. Is it?

    I do not consider it a mistake. However, it might be viewed as a bit old-fashioned. Personally, I like it.

    'Of the opinion' is old-fashioned, maybe, but well established. On analogy with it, 'of the conviction' would be quite understandable, especially when used to negate it, e.g. 'Of the opinion?!? No, he is of the conviction that...' I personally would probably not think of using it in any other circumstances.
