The Big Bang Theory Season 09 Episode 01

Amy has broken up with Sheldon.
Sheldon: I know this may sound farfetched, but I'm on the market now. You know, if I dated Mandy, that would teach both Leonard and Amy a lesson.

Is this supposed to be a joke, saying someone's on the market? Because, to me, it sounds like Sheldon's one of those male prostitutes lining up waiting to be picked up.

It must be relatively new phrase, as I have not heard it. I am 62, btw. Maybe it is used by younger persons. I've heard of cows being "on the market," though the phrase does not refer to their mating availability.
