After living all over the world, she says, "something really hit us in the gut. It's just a feeling about what home is."

Does "something really hit us in the gut" refer to "we really realize something vital in our heart?" Thanks.

It is an idiom that definitely means that a realization takes place. It could be called a realization of the heart. Or, that you have realized something vital. Or, "We really realize something nostalgic." It is the type of happening that could cause your eyes to swell up into tears.
