Is it essential to use "something" in your first sentence?

They both sound very awkward to me.

The second is not correct, but neither sounds like natural English. I'd use these instead:

1-I don't think anybody here knows that John is a policeman.
2-I don't think anybody here knows John Henderson, from the NYPD.
