The full quote from a story: "It's not that he was sorry to be alive, but simply that he had made his peace and was ready to leave this world."

The literal translation would be "ce n'est pas qu'il était désolé d'être en vie", which could be rendered as "ce n'est pas qu'il regrettait d'être en vie/vivant"...
