Let me try as an exercise (totally unrealiable, please correct)

"I let a whisper of surprise escape "
"I let go my surprise in a whisper"

    You little ripper!

I allow a sigh of surprise to escape is the way you would translate that literally but I breathe a sigh of surprise sounds better in English.
I have never heard that expression. It is usually a sigh of relief or pleasure, but when I Googled it there were nearly 500 listings.
