Sparare ad una mosca con un cannone

Hi everybody,
in Italian we're used to saying:
- stiamo sparando ad una mosca con un cannone
to typically indicate that our approach to a problem is exaggerated, our measures are excessive and the problem doesn't need to be dealt with so much aggressiveness.

Well, can the English "take a hammer to crack a nut" be considered an equivalent or is there another fashion to convey the same semantics in English?
