Could you please give me a synonym for 'spent' in the following context?

His thinking was calm, even vaguely pleasant, but his face was twitching. So many people and no one was talking and his face would not stop twitching. To his side, perhaps five metres away, a second trapdoor lay open, spent, and rising out of it a taut rope. He realised at its end, out of sight, dangled Kenji Mogami.

The character the passage is talking about is sentenced to death by hanging, he is on the scaffold and soon to be hanged.

The trapdoor opens and the man on the scaffold drops and hangs. So, the trapdoor that is open has already been 'used' to fulfil its purpose.
