spike with sunshine

    Hi,

    It is a rather literary saying but how can I paraphrase "spike" in "spike with sunshine"? Can it be "is interrupted"?

    Here's the sentence: "...the path through the trees spiked with sunshine." (M. Meloy, Red from Green).

    The sun's rays pierce the trees like spikes, and fall on the path.
