Spin dry

Hello,

My dear Spanish colleague and myself can't get to an agreement.
We have to translate "Spin dry"....yes, the washing machine cycle as in wash, rinse and spin dry.

The dilema is between: "Exprimir" and "Centrifugado"

Any suggestions or preferences?

Centrifugado is what we use in Spain. As far as I know, "exprimir" doesn't apply to clothes, the proper verb is "escurrir" but it refers to do it manually. What washing machines do is "centrifugar".

In Spain is centrifugado ALWAYS.

Exprimir is to get the juice of citrics!

Let me to boficar a little.

In some situations, "exprimir" and "centrifugar" has the similar objective, that is "dry".

The action of centrifugar is used in several machines with several aplications.


About clothes.

The current washer machine uses the action of centrifugar to dry the clothes.

The oldest washer machines used the action of "exprimir" to dry the clothes. Nowadays, in some parts of Mexico, the people wash the clothes wiht their hands, then they "exprimen" the clothes. I do not in another countries, but in MEXICO, we use the action of exprimir to the clothes. Like ladyblakeney says , we hang out to "escurrir" them after of "exprimir". Also oculto says, in México we use the action of "exprimir" for to get the juice of the citrics.

Ladyblakeney, in México escurrir and exprimir have different meaning. Or my english is very bad? I tried to explain it in the past post.

All right then, we are clear now. In Spain we use "escurrir" as they use "exprimir" in Mexico. But I believe that, to avoid misundertanding everywhere, "centrifugar" is the best option for washing machines.

But as Lady B. mentions, "Centrifugar" sounds ok even for us that use the word "Exprimir"

Perhaps in Mexico you make a distinction between:

"exprimir"= retorcer la ropa mojada para eliminar el exceso de agua (the action of wringing a wet piece of clothe to eliminate the water).
"escurrir" = colgar la ropa húmeda para que suelte el exceso de agua (the action of hanging a piece of clothe to let the water drop out).

In Spain, we use "escurrir" for both notions.

Is it any clearer now?

I still vote for "centrifugar" for the sake of understanding.

Yes !!!!!!!!!

The word is CENTRIFUGAR. Technically the word is CENTRIFUGAR. Because you are talking about " spin dry ". And the action of centrifugar is due to turns at high speed (spin), the clothes is dried for the resulting force, denominated "centrifugal force" (imagines the tangent of a circle)

The chat about centrifugar and exprimir was only an example and can boficar.
