sprinkles

Hi,

Between January and July 2014, 9,800 children between 6-59 months of age have received sprinkles while 3,920 pregnant and lactating women have received micronutrients.

I was wondering what could be sprinkles here? Actually, it's a report for UNHCR concerning the Syrian refugees crisis.

Thanks,

This is a very unusual use of the word sprinkles. My guess would be that it refers to something the agency sprinkles on food - perhaps vitamin supplements or something. It is impossible to tell without a definition, however, and it is unlikely that such a report would not contain the definition somewhere. Read the report carefully, to see if sprinkles is defined anywhere in it.
