spurt out balls

In this picture(Dora the Explorer, an American educational animation):
When the volcano exploded, lots and lots of balls of different colors came out, these balls were forced out of the volcano and were flying very fast.

Can I say the volcano spurted out these balls? Or what other verb can I use here to describe the volcano?
(I know I can use "spurt" with liquid, but these balls are not liquid)

Thank you.

It wouldn't upset me to see "the balls spurted from the volcano", but I think I'd say that the balls "erupted from the volcano", since that's the verb we associate with volcanoes.
