Square head (mostly)

It is acceptable to call a person "black"; no other adjectives are allowed under the Incitement to Racial Hatred Act. If you were to call a black person "chocolate" he would be entitled to sue you, provided he had witnesses.

By the same token, a black person calling a white person "white trash" (which often happens) could be sued by the offended party.

Really??!!! I find this highly surprising and strange. Here in Spain people are calling each other names all the time. If I wanted to sue each person who has called me a "square head"..........

  • Dear Heidi,

Would you consider "square head" a racial slur? I've not heard this term as abusive. What does it mean, coming from a Spaniard to a German?

    Thanks.:)

Hello Laura, always nice seeing you around!

No , not really, no racial slur, but definitely (trying to be) offensive. But it always takes two, doesn't it?!

I'm pleased to hear that "square head" isn't a recial slur. You see, our law against "Incitement to Racial Hatred" deals with just that. It is for the protection of all races living in the UK. We are now a multi-national country. Anyone insulting someone of another race, publicly, can be arrested.

This law was created to increase harmony between everyone living in the UK.

Not to put a new spin on this, but as a Canuck from french-speaking Canada I can tell you that francophones use this moniker to label us anglophones. A "tete caree" (square-head) is a derogatory term for an anglophone (especially one who doesn't speak French and is unfashionable).

Whether this makes it a racial slur, a cultural one, or just plain old bad manners...I leave that for you to decide.

    Cheers

Very interesting, Bellerophon. I'd put it down to bad manners.

Judging from your cute avatar, anyone calling you "square head" would be very wrong. You are more of a "tete pointue". :D
