Stab in the back

Hello. I have a question about" stab in the back"
My grammar text says that " He's not with us any more. -You mean he escaped?- No, he was stabbed in the back by a fellow prisoner and died" . I know what "stab in the back " means .But in this sentence I don't know whether the fellow prisoner killed him directly or the fellow prisoner did something bad for him and he was caught and died .
So I want to know which is the correct interpretation.

No, he was stabbed in the back by a fellow prisoner and died" = He died because he was stabbed in the back.
