Stable trend

  • Something that is not expected to change for quite a while.

    for example:

The home-buying boom in London is exepcted to continue on a stable trend up.

    Hello,

I would expect low volatility/fluctuations: no huge peaks or troughs.

But if you saw a line that was rising to the right more or less linearly, would you describe it as stable? The reason I ask is that there seems to be a trend to call stable lines that are not rising or falling - i.e. more or less parallel to the horizontal axis. Is there another way to refer to such a trend?

I'm not aware of that trend. To me, a line such as you described originally is stable. A line that is more or less parallel to the x axis is flat. There may be other terms, depending on the sector/market.

Yes. I work in finance in London and I come across this all the time. A line that is rising to the right more or less linearly would still be described as a stable trend.

I've been looking at papers from different sectors and I haven't found a suitable adjective. Infact, stable seems to be quite commonly used (within technical and scientific realms). I have thought about a flat trend before but the two words seem to be contradictory. I suppose a possibility is to say there is no trend or a null trend.

So, you would say a stable rising trend? I feel comfortable with this, but the epidemiologists I work with do not.

I don't see flat trend as contradictory. A trend means a progression in a certain direction - it may be positive or negative, but does not have to be.

Null trend to me suggests no movement whatsoever, which does not apply, since you are referring to a trend/a progression, be it stable or flat.
