stand in relation to one another


The equivalent of this escapes me in French. here is the orignal context:

Morality is where individuals stand in relation to one another outside of institutions.

my go is:

La moralité est où les individus s'addressent à l'extérieur des institutions.

s'addresser isn't exactly what I am after though. Does anyone have a better idea that doesn't connote the idea of addressing someone? Thanks in advance.

    J'hésite entre deux interprétations :

    L'éthique commence là où les individus entrent (variante : se mettent) en relations hors des institutions.


    L'éthique, c'est quand les individus etc.
