I've often heard people say "X is starring in the last James Bond" and I was wondering if there was a grammatical justification to use the present progressive instead of the present simple "X stars in ..." or if it was just a question of usage?

Thanks a lot!

To my mind, I would use "X is starring in..." for an upcoming film, "X stars in..." for a current film and "X starred in..." for a past film.
I know that in all correctness, my first example should be "X will be starring in..."
As for grammatical justification, I'm at a loss.

Thanks a lot for your answer!

I've also seen written somewhere "The film stars X, Y, Z ..." and I was wondering if the question "Who does the film star?" (almost no google hits) was correct / would be used in a conversation about cinema?

    Cheers!
