Bonjour à tous :
"In 1833 Hawker, in his book "Instructions to Young Sportsmen" stated in connection with Joseph Manton: "Lancaster, who has raised many gunmakers to the head of the trade by allowing them to put their names to what was his work in all the essential parts of the barrels, has some time since started for himself. This I advised him to do if ever Joe retired ... I may safely say that no man stands before him".

qu'est-ce que ça veut dire "has some time since started for himself" ?

Merci par avance
Cordialement

    I understand :
Lancaster has worked for other people (he allowed them to put their names on his work).
Some time since, (he) has started for himself = a (short?) time ago he started to put his own name on his work.
