To start a conversation at a party held by a woman, which is more proper:
"How do you know the 'host?'"
or "hostess?"

Thank you!

Host if the party is put on by a chap, or hostess if a woman is throwing the party. In fact it sounds a little formal, and especially if it is a couple you would be better off using their names. How do you know Joe and Bill?

If it's a couple you could also say "How do you know our hosts?" but I agree that names are appropriate at a private party where everyone is expected to know the host or the hostess in some way.
