step on a bug

The Big Bang Theory Season 05 Episode 18

Penny: Okay, what just happened?
Leonard: I don’t know. Between you playing chess like Bobby Fischer and Sheldon being okay with you in his spot, I’m guessing someone went back in time, stepped on a bug, and changed the course of human events.

Is the bug an insect? Does stepped on a bug help Leonard's speculation?

Yes, the bug is an insect.
I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "help Leonard's speculation."
With the context you've provided, I understand it to simply mean a small action
which somehow would have altered the course of events (Maybe he was inspired by
    "the butterfly effect").

It's not to be taken literally, of course. It's just an exaggerated way of trying to explain the very
unusual behavior he's witnessing (Penny playing chess like a champion chess player and Sheldon
not being irritated as usual with someone in his spot).

Typically, in science fiction stories/movies, when someone goes back in time
and does something that didn't happen at that time, it changes the course of events.

I knew the movies, The Butterfly Effect 1,2,3. And there's another one, which was based on the same theory to present stories, called Project Almanac 2014.

So I was famaliar with the theory. Thank you all the same, Diva.
