stern of a street-lamp

Dear all
What's your definition for "stern" in the following context, chosen from "The Three Soldiers" by Dos Passos:
Time: 1918
Location: Paris
Once he stopped and leaned for a long while against the moisture-beaded stern of a street-lamp.
Does it mean "body"?

I suppose he is somehow comparing the street lamp to a ship: the bow emits light, you can lean on the stern. Then maybe the lamp is rounded like the stern of a (very small) ship.
