Stare and essere are giving me alot of problems. Are there any general rules on when to use which?

I posted a really long detailed list of examples but it doesn't show in the thread(sono un imbranato al computer - lo uso da meno di 3 anni). I'll try re-writing it:

    stare bene/male

stare diritto/in piedi/sdraiato/disteso/ in piedi ecc.

    stare fermo/calmo/tranquillo/in guardia/in ansia/buono/al proprio posto ecc.

stare insieme = be an item ma Elisa e Carlo stanno insieme?

stai fresco! = you can forget about it!

lascia stare! Pago io = don't! It's on me!

lasciami stare = leave me alone

quel vestito ti sta proprio bene = it suits you

Non ci sto! = I won't put up up with this

sta a te + inf. = it's up to you...

i mods non riescono a stare dietro a Carlo - è come un bambino incontrollabile:) = keep an eye on

And finally don't forget "stare per + inf." = be about to do something.

    L'areo sta per atterrare

I'm sure I've missed quite a few idiomatic expressions but this should give you an idea.

Also keep in mind that in the South it's quite common to use "stare" invece di "essere" in "Dove stai/sei?".

    Carlo
