Hi, I've been reading to see if I'm able to understand this sentence ("subprime mortgage investigations" but I'm steel not very sure of what it means.

I'm thinking on somethin like this:

somebody (a company) has a mortgage and the company can't pay it so other mortgage company takes it

BUT what I don't get is the "investigation" part..
    I'll give you more context

" the growing use of deferred prsecutions also suggests one road map the Justice Department might follow in the subprime mortgage investigations"

Thaks and please, correct any mistake..!

The Justice Department is investigating how the subprime mortgage industry got everybody into the mess they're in.
