Source: The Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King (2003), a fantasy movie.

Gandalf and other mighty warriors of Middle-Earth go up to the Black Gate of Mordor, where a servant of Sauron (the Dark Lord of Mordor) called Mouth of Sauron tells Gandalf that they captured and killed a hobbit named Frodo. He throws Gandalf Frodo's unique shirt of chain mail:
"The Halfling was dear to thee, I see. Know that he suffered greatly at the hands of his host. Who would've thought one so small could endure so much pain?"

Could you tell me what the word host means here and who or what "his host" refers to?
