Hi guys, please can someone rephrase this sentence?

Oddly, many of these unusual businesses thrive by giving things away, recruiting a legion of fans and followers who support their paid work whenever it is finally offered.

recruiting a legion of fans = hire a fans? hire someone who enthusiasticly support your business?

support their paid work = they support their own job, they talk about it to other people, because they love it?

Thank you.

Not hiring, no. More 'getting the attention and interest of' then having them subscribe to or join something.

The second part of the sentence is extremely ambiguous and does not make sense.
