I encircled her waist with my arm.
I surrounded her waist with my arm.

Which one is used more often and sounds more natural? Are there words which can substitute "encircle" or "surround" and make the sentences sound more natural?
Thanks.

Neither is natural and "surrounded" is not an appropriate verb. You surround something in order to prevent its escape and/or capture it, or in order to mark the limits of its territory.

"I put my arm around her waist."

I find "encircled" acceptable, but a bit literary. (In fact it's a common cliché in romantic novels.) Otherwise I agree with Paul.
