Swedish: check if he is okay

What's the difference between saying:

Jag kom för att kontrollera att han är okej.'

and

Jag kom för att kolla om han är okej.

The first sounds more formal to me, or maybe it implies a more formal setting or task. The second sounds fare more colloquial. If you go over to your friends house and someone else opens the door and you explain why you're there and something had happened to him last night (too drunk, got in a fight, broke up with partner...) you would use the second.

The second seems far more common to me.

and

Jag kom för att kolla om han är var okej.

Also note that since you are using the paste tense, the second verb should agree with that.
